Syoss is a retail haircare brand that was founded in 2007 in Germany. It quickly became one of the most successful hair cosmetics brands that launched in the past ten years. It is advertised towards men and women ages 25 – 50, who want to achieve professional results at home.
Today, Syoss is sold all across the world and has become a widely recognized hair care, hair styling, and hair coloration brand. It can be found in several stores, including Lilly Drogerie(in Bulgaria) and DM(in Germany), but also on Amazon.com for US shoppers.
Is Syoss Cruelty-Free?
|Not sold in China?||No|
|Leaping Bunny Certified||No|
|Has vegan products||No|
|Not owned by a Parent Company that does Animal Testing?||No|
Syoss is not cruelty-free.
As all EU brands, Syoss by itself doesn’t test its finished products, as well as ingredients and formulations, on animals. However, it does pay a third-party to conduct these tests in the countries where animal testing is required by law. Also, it sells its product in various countries where all in-store products have to be tested on animals. There is no cruelty-free policy to be found on its suppliers, as well.
Although Syoss claims to use and fund alternative testing methods, they will still test on animals when asked to, so that they can sell their products to more countries.
Suppose you like Syoss’ products but don’t want to support a brand that conducts animal testing. In that case, you can always contact its representatives, and politely ask them to reconsider their cruelty-free policies. Just remember always to be respectful, as hate speech never accomplished anything.

Are Syoss products sold in China?
Yes, Syoss does sell its products in mainland China.
What is the Deal with China?
Even though animal testing is proven to be an unnecessary and unethical practice, some countries still require it by law. This is the case with the second-biggest market in the world, China.
China requires any beauty product to be tested on animals before allowing importation and being sold in Chinese stores. Any company or brand that makes the decision to sell in China has also decided to test on animals – either by themselves or, usually, by paying a third-party company to test on their behalf. This is the main reason why a lot of brands can’t achieve a true cruelty-free status. After growing public outrage, China did lift some regulations in 2014, which allowed certain beauty products, such as shampoos and other skincare items, to be imported without testing, but this is still a small percentage.
A lot of brands that claim to be cruelty-free are being misleading thanks to these laws. Even if a brand doesn’t conduct animal testing on its own, by deciding to take the opportunity and sell in countries such as China, it is allowing a third-party to test the final product on animals. This is why PETA and the Leaping Bunny Program have forbidden brands that they certify to expand their market in this direction – and rightfully so.
A lot of companies are working with the Chinese government on lifting these regulations, and legislation was proposed in 2019 that should stop mandatory animal testing. However until today, no substantial progress has been made in this regard, we continue to wait patiently.
Is Syoss Vegan?
No, Syoss is not a vegan brand. Almost all of Syoss’ products contain some animal-derived ingredients or animal by-products.
Syoss does, however, have a vegan Syoss Pure line of hair styling products, which does use plant-based ingredients. As the brand isn’t cruelty-free, though, most vegans probably won’t agree to use it, as vegan is more than just ingredients. Any product that isn’t cruelty-free can hardly be considered vegan.
Who owns Syoss and does the parent company test on animals?
Syoss is owned by Henkel PRF, a German company that is not cruelty-free. However, Henkel does allow its brands to create their own cruelty-free policies, as some of the brands it owns aren’t conducting animal testing. This means that Syoss ultimately made the decision not to be cruelty-free.
What products does Syoss sell?
Syoss offers a wide variety of hair care products. It has several lines of hair conditioners, shampoos, and other items for hair care. At the same time, it is highly praised for its professional hairstyling line.
Syoss is probably best known for its hair dyes. Its dyes are high in shine and are developed with the help of professionals.
