What Does It Offer?
Born This Way is a moderately expensive foundation that claims to look as natural as human skin – hence its name. It has medium coverage, which means it should cover all but strongest blemishes without looking cakey or unnatural. It’s oil-free, created for any skin type. It comes in 35 different shades, so we are sure you can find the right one to match your skin tone, no matter how pale or tanned you are.
The foundation is said to be almost undetectable, and it can be layered down so you can achieve stronger coverage if needed. This should be great for anyone who wants to have better-looking skin while doing even the most natural makeup. It has a liquid formulation and should provide you with a natural finish. In the words of the brand, it allows more people to have ‘flawless, “I woke up like this” skin.’
There is also a matte version of this foundation, and both of them have the same names and the same shades. The most significant difference is in the finish, as Born This Way Matte makes your skin look… well, matte.
What Is the Product Like?
First off, we cannot ignore the great packaging this foundation has. Too Faced is a brand that typically aims towards the younger population keen on social media and influencers. However, Born This Way foundation as a luxurious-looking glass bottle with simple gold and black colors.
However, the first thing that can be noticed is that the Born This Way foundation looks nowhere near natural. Don’t get me wrong – it’s great – but you’ll clearly look like someone wearing a foundation with it. This isn’t a bad thing, as this product still is one of the best-looking foundations out there. If you really want to make it look as natural as possible, use a damp sponge to ‘water’ it a bit. This way, it indeed can look like a better version of your skin. Also, it sits perfectly on your face, no matter what skin type you have. For example, my skin is on the dry side, but it doesn’t look cakey for a second. Also, as it is oil-free, it won’t make oily skin worse. However, if you are on the oily side, I recommend using the matte foundation, as it will last much longer on your skin.
However, it isn’t as long-lasting as some other, similarly priced products. Even on my dry skin, it looks oily some six to eight hours after applying it. Luckily, it doesn’t look ugly, and it isn’t separating as severely as some other foundations can. I can simply notice a few patches around my T-zone.
I typically avoid using matte foundations, as I find them to look dusty on dry skin. However, to my surprise, Born This Way Matte doesn’t look flakey. Quite the opposite, it’s easily one of the most gorgeous matte foundations I’ve tried. It doesn’t look as natural as the original Born This Way foundation, but it is much longer-lasting. Opposite to the previous one, this one lasted a whole day! Still, I prefer the look of Born This Way natural foundation on the drier skin, while I believe Born This Way Matte is better for people whose faces tend to gather more oil. Like the Born This Way, its matte version can be layered, and once again, it doesn’t look unnatural.
Also, you can layer cream products on top of this foundation without any problems what so ever! A common issue with many matte foundations is that they start to wear off if you use any products on top of it, such as cream blush. I’ve found no such issues with this one. All in all, I was quite impressed with both versions of the foundation.
Ingredients
After briefly checking the Too Faced website, Born This Way and Born This Way Matte foundations don’t seem to contain any known harmful ingredients. They do contain hyaluronic acid, which is a common ingredient that provides a youthful appearance of the skin. This is probably what gives the foundation a natural look on the face.
The product also contains Alpine Rose and Coconut Water. Alpine Rose isn’t a common ingredient, and I had to Google it to check it out. It turns out it’s good for the health of the skin and is said to make our face more resilient to the weather damage. On the other hand, coconut water is a known hydrating ingredient with many benefits to the skin.
Another good news is that Born This Way is free of parabens.
Is It Vegan And Cruelty-Free?
Too Faced is a cruelty-free brand that isn’t 100% vegan. However, you would be delighted to know that Born This Way and Born This Way Matte are both vegan products, as they don’t contain any animal-derived ingredients or animal by-products.

The foundation looks excellent, and it doesn’t reflect when photographed with a flash. It’s also great for layering, and it looks perfect with any product on top of it.

The foundation definitely leans toward full-coverage. With just a little concealer on top of it, you can make your face look flawless!
Conclusion
All in all, I have to say I am impressed with both versions of this foundation. It isn’t perfect, but you definitely get what you paid for for a price of around $40. They don’t look like you wear nothing, but they surely look like a better version of your skin. For a foundation that officially offers medium coverage, it sure covers everything it should. I would even dare say it leans towards full coverage, especially if used in layers.
While Born This Way is excellent for people with dry and combination skin, Born This Way Matte is perfect for people with oily faces. The matte foundation does last longer, but it isn’t as natural as the original one. Which one is better depends on your preference.
