Is Sante Cruelty Free: Sante is Not Fully Vegan Brand

Sante Natural Cosmetics is a decorative cosmetics and skincare brand from Germany. It has over 40 years of experience in producing natural makeup and skincare items. The brand tries to stay as natural as possible, so most of its products are made without synthetic ingredients.

NATRUE or BDIH certify most of the brand’s products. These organizations certify that the items are indeed entirely natural. It also has the COSMOS NATURAL seal, which further confirms that the brand truly is natural. Its ingredients are raw and plant-based, and even the fragrances that Sante uses are natural.

The brand tries to promote sustainability and environmentally-friendly working conditions. Its production site, located in Salzhemmendorf in Germany, is CO2 neutral, and it uses 100% green energy.

Not owned by a Parent Company that does Animal Testing? No

grade 4

Yes, Sante is a cruelty-free brand.

As with most EU-based brands, the brand doesn’t conduct, fund, or contract out animal testing during the production of its finished products. At the same time, none of its ingredients are tested on animals, and all of its suppliers are cruelty-free as well. The brand doesn’t pay for a third party to conduct animal tests on its behalf, and it doesn’t sell its products in countries that require animal testing of imported items.

The brand states that it believes that humanity cannot coexist in the environment where animal testing is done.

Sante isn’t certified by PETA, and it doesn’t have the Leaping Bunny label. As the membership in these two programs is entirely voluntary, this shouldn’t raise any concerns, primarily due to the strict EU laws(*).

What is the Deal with China?

Even though animal testing is proven to be an unnecessary and unethical practice, some countries still require it by law. This is the case with the second-biggest market in the world, China.

China requires any beauty product to be tested on animals before allowing importation and being sold in Chinese stores. Any company or brand that makes the decision to sell in China has also decided to test on animals – either by themselves or, usually, by paying a third-party company to test on their behalf. This is the main reason why a lot of brands can’t achieve a true cruelty-free status. After growing public outrage, China did lift some regulations in 2014, which allowed certain beauty products, such as shampoos and other skincare items, to be imported without testing, but this is still a small percentage.

A lot of brands that claim to be cruelty-free are being misleading thanks to these laws. Even if a brand doesn’t conduct animal testing on its own, by deciding to take the opportunity and sell in countries such as China, it is allowing a third-party to test the final product on animals. This is why PETA and the Leaping Bunny Program have forbidden brands that they certify to expand their market in this direction – and rightfully so.

A lot of companies are working with the Chinese government on lifting these regulations, and legislation was proposed in 2019 that should stop mandatory animal testing. However until today, no substantial progress has been made in this regard, we continue to wait patiently.

Is Sante Vegan?

Sante is not a vegan brand. Many of its products use some animal-derived ingredients or animal by-products, such as lanolin, beeswax, or carmine. However, the brand has a large number of vegan products, all of which are clearly labeled.

Who owns Sante and does the parent company test on animals?

Sante is own by L’Oreal, a cosmetics company that bought Sante in 2018. L’Oreal is not cruelty-free. However, it does allow the brands it owns to have their own animal testing policy, which enables Sante to remain cruelty-free. However, some people don’t want to support brands that are owned by a parent company that isn’t cruelty-free. The choice is up to you.
