Revlon, Inc. is a multinational cosmetics, fragrance, skincare, and personal care company that is based in New York City, USA. It was founded in 1932 by Charles and Joseph Revson and Charles Lachman. The name is derived from the brother’s surnames, but with added letter ‘L’ in honor of Lachman.
The first product the company manufactured was a nail enamel, unique because it was created using pigments instead of dyes. In 1937 the brand started selling its nail polishes in pharmacies and various department stores and soon became a multimillion-dollar company. They quickly added an entire manicure line, as well as lipsticks. During World War II, Revlon manufactured various makeup-related products to the US Army that won the Army-Navy “E” award for its excellence. When the war was over, the brand was the number two cosmetics brand in the US.
In 1996, the company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. By that time, they extended their sales overseas and added various other cosmetic products, such as deodorants, creams, hair, and wig maintenance products and perfumes.

Revlon is not cruelty-free.
The brand was certified by PETA until 2011 when it lost its Beauty Without Bunnies label after it was found out that the brand was paying laboratories in China to test its cosmetics on animals such as rabbits.
Today, the brand doesn’t pay a third-party to test on its behalf, but they do conduct animal testing in countries where it’s required by law. The finished products itself aren’t tested on animals, but not much is known about the ingredients or formulations.
To this day, Revlon refuses to pull back its products from China, and it doesn’t show any intention to do so.

What is the Deal with China?
Even though animal testing is proven to be an unnecessary and unethical practice, some countries still require it by law. This is the case with the second-biggest market in the world, China.
China requires any beauty product to be tested on animals before allowing importation and being sold in Chinese stores. Any company or brand that makes the decision to sell in China has also decided to test on animals – either by themselves or, usually, by paying a third-party company to test on their behalf. This is the main reason why a lot of brands can’t achieve a true cruelty-free status. After growing public outrage, China did lift some regulations in 2014, which allowed certain beauty products, such as shampoos and other skincare items, to be imported without testing, but this is still a small percentage.
A lot of brands that claim to be cruelty-free are being misleading thanks to these laws. Even if a brand doesn’t conduct animal testing on its own, by deciding to take the opportunity and sell in countries such as China, it is allowing a third-party to test the final product on animals. This is why PETA and the Leaping Bunny Program have forbidden brands that they certify to expand their market in this direction – and rightfully so.
A lot of companies are working with the Chinese government on lifting these regulations, and legislation was proposed in 2019 that should stop mandatory animal testing. However until today, no substantial progress has been made in this regard, we continue to wait patiently.
