Is Dermasence Cruelty-Free: Why Dermasence is Cruelty-Free “For Now”?

Dermasence is a medical skincare brand founded in 1991 in Munster, Germany. It produces skincare solutions that it claims are approved by dermatologists. The brand’s goal is to create products that can solve skin problems occurring due to stress, incorrect care, or environmental influences, such as irritations, itching, or allergies.

The brand is relatively small, even in 2020, especially when compared to some other similar brands, with just around 170 employees. However, it quickly became one of the leading brands in the field of pharmacy cosmetics.

Today, the brand is sold in pharmacies in Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands. It cultivates and processes its own herbal ingredients to ensure the quality of its product

Dermasence is a cruelty-free brand… for now.

Dermasence doesn’t have an official animal testing policy. At the same time, as with all EU-based brands, it doesn’t conduct animal testing, and all of its ingredients are cruelty-free, as well. The brand doesn’t pay a third-party to test the items on its behalf, and all of its suppliers are cruelty-free as well.

Some sources claim that the brand has plans to expand on the Chinese market for a while now, which would make it lose its cruelty-free status. As of 2020, the brand is still considered to be cruelty-free.

Dermasence isn’t approved by PETA, and it doesn’t have the Leaping Bunny label. However, this shouldn’t cause any concern as the EU has its laws that ensure there is no animal testing involved, unless in the case of exported products.

What is the Deal with China?

Even though animal testing is proven to be an unnecessary and unethical practice, some countries still require it by law. This is the case with the second-biggest market in the world, China.

China requires any beauty product to be tested on animals before allowing importation and being sold in Chinese stores. Any company or brand that makes the decision to sell in China has also decided to test on animals – either by themselves or, usually, by paying a third-party company to test on their behalf. This is the main reason why a lot of brands can’t achieve a true cruelty-free status. After growing public outrage, China did lift some regulations in 2014, which allowed certain beauty products, such as shampoos and other skincare items, to be imported without testing, but this is still a small percentage.

A lot of brands that claim to be cruelty-free are being misleading thanks to these laws. Even if a brand doesn’t conduct animal testing on its own, by deciding to take the opportunity and sell in countries such as China, it is allowing a third-party to test the final product on animals. This is why PETA and the Leaping Bunny Program have forbidden brands that they certify to expand their market in this direction – and rightfully so.

A lot of companies are working with the Chinese government on lifting these regulations, and legislation was proposed in 2019 that should stop mandatory animal testing. However until today, no substantial progress has been made in this regard, we continue to wait patiently.

Is Dermasence Vegan?

Dermasence is not a vegan brand. Most of its products use animal-derived ingredients or animal by-products. However, the company states that it uses plant-based ingredients whenever possible. It doesn’t have a clear list of vegan products, so we would suggest checking the ingredients first(**).

What products does Dermasence sell?

Dermasence sells products for various skin-related issues, including redness, discoloration, allergies, or acne. It has over 50 different products created for all skin types. It even has some products that are suitable for children, and it sells items for UV protection.
