Is CeraVe Cruelty-Free: Not Even Close

CeraVe was founded in 2006 in the US. They specialize in creating skincare products using their MultiVesicular Emulsion Technology, for which they’ve received multinational praise. This is considered to be one of the best skincare brands in the US, and they have received numerous awards for their achievements in battling skin problems, such as eczema as a main example.

Is CeraVe Cruelty-Free?

Not sold in China? No
PETA Certified No
Leaping Bunny Certified No
Has vegan products No
Not owned by a Parent Company that does Animal Testing? No

grade 1

Sadly, this well-known and high-quality brand is not cruelty-free. It isn’t certified by PETA nor the Leaping Bunny, and they don’t have a cruelty-free policy. There are testimonies from various fans of the brand that have tried to contact them to clarify whether or not the brand tests on animals or if it’s vegan, but the official answers so far have been contradictory and misleading.

In fact, CeraVe agrees on having a third-party test some of their final products on animals in order to be able to sell them in countries that require animal testing by law. This is the main reason for the outrage from their former fans.

If you love CeraVe but want to go cruelty-free, you can always find a way to contact them and respectfully ask them to reconsider their cruelty-free policies and to halt selling on markets that require animal testing until the laws change. Keep in mind that you should never send hate to anyone or any brand, even if you disagree with their values.

Are CeraVe products sold in China?

Yes, CeraVe sells its products in mainland China. However, a portion of their skincare products can be sold without being tested on animals since the minor law change that occurred in 2014.

What is the Deal with China?

Even though animal testing is proven to be an unnecessary and unethical practice, some countries still require it by law. This is the case with the second-biggest market in the world, China.

China requires any beauty product to be tested on animals before allowing importation and being sold in Chinese stores. Any company or brand that makes the decision to sell in China has also decided to test on animals – either by themselves or, usually, by paying a third-party company to test on their behalf. This is the main reason why a lot of brands can’t achieve a true cruelty-free status. After growing public outrage, China did lift some regulations in 2014, which allowed certain beauty products, such as shampoos and other skincare items, to be imported without testing, but this is still a small percentage.

A lot of brands that claim to be cruelty-free are being misleading thanks to these laws. Even if a brand doesn’t conduct animal testing on its own, by deciding to take the opportunity and sell in countries such as China, it is allowing a third-party to test the final product on animals. This is why PETA and the Leaping Bunny Program have forbidden brands that they certify to expand their market in this direction – and rightfully so.

A lot of companies are working with the Chinese government on lifting these regulations, and legislation was proposed in 2019 that should stop mandatory animal testing. However until today, no substantial progress has been made in this regard, we continue to wait patiently.

Is CeraVe Vegan?

No, CeraVe is not a vegan brand. You can find a few products that don’t contain animal by-products on their catalog, but being vegan isn’t a practice this brand has. In fact, some of the main ingredients for most of their skincare products are animal-derived cholesterol and lanolin honey. They don’t use ingredients that are derived from porcine (pork) and bovine (pig), but their products still contain animal by-products derived from insects and fish. While we’re at it, CeraVe has never claimed to be organic or even natural.

In 2019, though, CeraVe announced that it’s taking steps towards finding a replacement for animal-derived ingredients and that the brand is planning on becoming vegan shortly.

Who owns CeraVe and does the parent company test on animals?

CeraVe is owned by L’Oréal, a French multinational company. L’Oréal itself is not cruelty-free, but it allows brands to operate under their own policies. This is why we can still see a lot of L’Oreal-owned brands that are also cruelty-free and/or vegan. That, however, is not the case with CeraVe, as they have made the decision to sell in China and not provide customers with a clear answer about them being cruelty-free.

What products does CeraVe sell?

Cerave is known for developing high-quality products using ceramides as main ingredients. They have a lot of products that specialize in certain skincare problems. They have been praised for their unique approach to solving various skin conditions, and they have been awarded more Sea of Acceptance awards from the US National Eczema Association than any other skincare brand.
